The Indian Government, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, had stated that this year’s International Yoga Day would be celebrated on digital media platforms and there would be no mass gatherings. This year’s theme would be ‘Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family’. AYUSH ministry had earlier planned to organise a grand event at Leh, which had to be cancelled due to the on-going pandemic.
According to a study led by Professor Mansour Almazroui from King Abdulaziz University of Saudi Arabia, India may face devastating climate change effects, including killer heat waves and severe flooding, in the next 80 years. The study urges for necessary steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to prevent the associated risks for the country’s population, ecosystem and economy.

The decision followed the recommendations of Data Safety Board of the WHO that reviewed mortality trends and concluded that there was no cause to modify any arm of the Solidarity Trial protocol, which is underway to test 4 drugs for efficacy against COVID-19.

The US has joined an international panel for setting ethical guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence. The Trump Administration had earlier dismissed the idea of the Group of Seven countries in setting up the Global Partnership on AI. This is to counter China’s record of “twisting technology” to threaten civil liberties. The partnership comes nearly two years after the leaders of Canada and France announcing the formation of the group.

The US launched its first airstrikes against the Taliban since a rare ceasefire between the insurgents and Afghan forces ended more than a week ago. The ceasefire was announced by Taliban to mark the Eid al-Fitr. The two airstrikes were conducted on June 4 and 5 in separate provinces in Afghanistan. There has been overall decline in violence across Afghanistan.
