On the occasion of World Crocodile Day (17 June), 116 gharials were born on Gandak River, which flow into Bihar from Nepal, covering over 320 km in the state. Gharials, which were previously widespread in Indian subcontinent, became endangered since 2006. In response, Gandak gharial conservation project was initiated in 2014 and there has been a consistent increase in the number of the critically endangered species since then.
